House and Workshop Plan 1, Oshima,
Kesennuma City Miyagi Prefecture

The island of Oshima is located in Kesennuma Bay. This plan was intended to rebuild the home and workshop of an oyster farming family. Before the Great East Japan Earthquake, the family lived in a house adjacent to the workshop situated near the oceanfront, however, the workshop and house were destroyed by the tsunami. The family decided to relocate their house to higher ground, and this plan would allow them to travel between their house and workshop by passing through sloping private land without using the public road. During the planning stage, we also considered building a new workshop, however, since the old building was still slightly intact, we decided to repair that and build only the house anew. Although this wasn’t a large project, it had relevance to community planning in that it entailed connecting two locations.
