The inland province of Guizhou in China is situated at high altitude. In addition to its urbanized areas, it is also known for highland summer resorts. Previously, bus sightseeing tours for experiencing nature were popular, however, the conventional tourism model has started to decline. As a new profit-making enterprise, plans were conceived to build hot spring facilities similar to those of Japan’s tourist areas in the vast mountains, thereby conducting redevelopment by making use of the natural environment of rivers and forests. We happened to receive an inquiry from Guizhou Province at this time. The plan was to build a hot spring facility on the highland alongside a river away from the urban area, and a restaurant in an area close to the city, and these facilities were to be connected by accommodation facilities. We viewed the hot spring facilities, accommodation facilities and restaurant as a community akin to an urban oasis. Although we only worked on the overall concept without becoming involved in specifics, we proposed ideas on how to read and understand the sites.
